altenew Educators’ “secret recipe” blog hop & linky party

Do you want to know a secret? Well, than you’re in the right place. Hop along with the Altenew Educators for some inspiration. If you are hopping along with us, than you have come from April Leithner and your next stop is Jennifer Leonard.

What is my secret recipe? Well how to make cute tags!

Tags are hard because the canvas is so small. In spite of the small size, tags need to have bold elements that make them stand out. Read on for my secret recipe for tags.

  1. Have a cool background.

Tags are about the background. Using embossing folders, stencils or washi tape are great ideas for making a cool background. This background is from Tiny Festive Patterns hot foil plate.

After foiling 80lb cardstock, I used Green Valley inks and small blending brushes to add color to the background.

The sentiment is from the Mistletoe Wreath stamp set. Altenew metallic thread is a perfect finishing touch.

2. Add a cool die cut.

Since tags are a small canvas, having a bold die cut adds interest. Consider using flowers, large letters, critters or snowflakes!

This die cut is from the Layered Snowflakes 2 die set. I cut the snowflakes from different kinds of card stock including: vellum, glitter and discarded backgrounds.

The background is made using the solid foiling plate from Festive Patterns hot foil plates and the Magic Burst hot foil plate.

3. Make it shine

Tags are a tiny space so everything you add to them needs to make an impact. Shiny elements like sequins, metallic thread and hot foil add to the wow factor.

This background is from the Tiny Festive Patterns hot foil plate. I ink blended green and red to add the colorful stripes.

4. Add a sentiment

The last part to a tag is a sentiment. I love the smaller sentiments within stamp sets which fit perfectly on tags. The sentiments used on these tags comes from the Mistletoe Wreath stamp set.

The tag dies come from the Terrific Tags die set which include fishtail and straight bottom options.

There are also smaller tags which are perfect for sentiments. I like to layer these smaller tags with the larger tags for more impact.

I have a video showing how I made these cards. Check it out here:
