Using backgrounds as a focal point
Waffle Flower Crafts last release contained a stamp set made for me: Plaid Play. This stamp set features strips of stamps in various widths and textures which when combined, can create a plaid background. I also love the idea of using some of these solid lines as borders on my cards. I had to get this set immediately. |
Creating a plaid background
I’m in need of a newborn baby boy card and wanted to make the plaid using soft blues, greens and yellows with a splash of orange. I used all Hero Arts shadow inks for this background because the ink dries so smoothly. Waffle Flower has a very short introduction video to using the stamp set and astamping example on their website as well as some cards made with the set. The video is really short and not a tutorial and the images show the end result, not the process so I wasn’t sure where to begin so I just started. My MISTI was a very important part of making this card and since I knew this was going to be a bit labor intensive, I made four cards at once. The benefit of the MISTI is that I could lay down a stamp to see where it should go as well as rotate the paper to stamp both horizontally and vertically.
I started with the two textured stamps using Tide Pool ink. I then rotated the paper and stamped with the same stamps using Field Greens. I then laid down the largest solid stripe and stamped in Cornflower. Using the same stamp, I used Sky Blue. At this point I wasn’t sure how to continue so I just kept laying the stamps down and seeing how they worked making sure not to have the lines perfectly centered. I worked from largest width stamp to smallest keeping the largest width stripes soft and the smallest a bit bolder. I continued with:Mint Julep, Butter Bar and Orange Soda. One of the stripes was too dark so I ended up restamping it using VersaMark and Martha Stewart Evergreen Embossing Powder. Overall I was very pleased with the plaid background. Now about that sentiment.
Pulling it together
The Hero Arts Little One stamp set has bold, large sentiments, accompanying smaller sentiments and a great quote for the inside of baby cards. I used Hero Arts India Ink to stamp “Welcome” and “to the world sweet baby” on vellum which I then heat embossed with Hero Arts Clear Embossing Powder. After cutting out the vellum with the 4″ diameter circle from the Hero Arts Nesting circle dies, I adhered the vellum onto the background using Ranger Multi Medium in matte. I placed the adhesive behind the letters and also some dots in the top and bottom. I let that dry and then added Nuvo crystal drops in Apple Green and Caribbean Ocean for color and to hide the adhesive. The backgrounds were adhered to Hero Arts card bases in an apple green anddark pool.
