Personalizing School Supplies

It’s that time of the year…

Ahh, new school supplies. For some reason I was compelled to go the second week of July to Staples and have the kids pick out their school supplies. Staples was also beginning their school supply deals with folders for $0.25 and such. So armed on a hot July day, we headed out to Staples with our school supply lists.
The kids each had a bag and did a good job keeping focused and got the items on their lists.  Evan had to exchange a few of his items for a different color and we had a meeting in the office chair section to review that we had everything before we checked out.
After we got home, I brought out all my Cricut Vinyl colors and had the kids tell me which color they wanted on what and specific designs on folders and binders. Here is what we came up with…

Why use the Cricut to label school supplies?

The Cricut Explore Air and Cricut Design Space have been a great investment for me. I use them a lot and especially to cut out specific names and decorations. I have used this machine to embellish scrapbook pages, make birthday gifts and personalize the kids’ stuff. By using the Cricut, I can make the names any size, color, and really personalize it to their liking.
Cricut Design Space makes it easy to see what the final design will look like. With Cricut Access, you have access to the entire design library and instead of buying an entire cartridge with images that wont be used, you can just purchase the one image you want. I have owned a Cricut machine since the early 2000s so I have built up quite a library of cartridges but with the image library, I can easily search for what I want instead of looking through the books of each cartridge to find the one image or font I need.

Evan likes monkeys so I chose this monkey from Create a Critter Cartridge

Evan likes monkeys. To jazz up his supplies I used monkey images from Create a Critter cartridge. I measured the folders, binders and clipboard and then imported the images in from my library. I sized then cut the images and adhered them on. Transfer tape is a must to make sure everything aligns properly before really tacking it down.

Savannah likes zebras. The zebra on the folders is from Create a Critter. The Zebra driving a car is from the Paisley cartridge. Another resource for finding the right Cricut image is using MyCutSearch.com.  All fonts used are from A Child’s Year.

After applying her name, Savannah dug into my crafty supplies and added some gemstones and used decorating scissors to further personalize her pencil box.

Best tools to use with Cricut Vinyl…

To make this process faster and easier, these are the top things to use:

  1. Cricut Design Space – with this you can plan out colors, sizes and fonts to see what it will look like on your project
  2. Cricut Weeding Tool – this is great for pulling up the extra vinyl
  3. Cricut Scraper XL – This tool is great for applying vinyl and making sure no bubbles are in the design
  4. Cricut Transfer Tape – I used one piece on this whole project so you do not need much of this. Once I started using this to apply vinyl, it just made the process so much easier. Buy the roll; it will last a long time. Just make sure to de-tack it a bit before using – I just stick it to my pants or shirt a few times before I use it or else the letters and design will stick to the tape too much
  5. Cricut vinyl sampler packs – I like the sampler packs because I can get a ton of colors on one roll. This way I can have a lot of options for  colors without having too much left over. Sampler packs provide one 12×12 sheet of each color.

PictureBossyJocie Pencils and Mabel’s Labels

I have used Mabel’s Labels in the past and have found them to be great. The labels stick well, survive the wash and you can customize them.
For pencils, I got personalized pencils from Bossy Joscie. com. I ordered the rainbow pencils and presented them to the kids who immediately loved them. There are 35 pencils in arainbow pack which “should” last a few years at least.
This summer the school sent some summer work home. We have been doing math, writing and reading everyday before hitting the pool or other fun activities. It is nice to help the kids, build their confidence with the work and they like showing off what they can do. Looking forward to the next month and a half of summer left to go. Please let me know in the comments your favorite way of labeling school supplies.
