Personalized Birthday Apron

For birthday gifts, I like to make personalized gifts especially for children with unusual names or spellings where personalized gifts are not readily available in stores. One idea I had was to make an apron and include the child’s name and an fun image. The whole birthday gift would be centered around baking and decorating cookies.

Making the apron

Cricut Design Space has a great feature called a canvas. The computer software places a blank canvas on the workspace that you can customize the size and use it to determine spacing and placement of your images and text. I used Cricut Design Space to build my design and then used the Cricut Explore Air to cut the design out of iron on vinyl. For the watermelon image, I used Cricut Iron On Lite Pink Blush as the base,Cricut Multi glitter iron on for the rind and Cricut Iron-On Lite black for the seeds. For the name, I usedCricut Doodletype font set and Cricut Royal blue glitter iron on.

After designing and cutting out the images and text, I used my iron to iron them onto a blank apron from Joann’s. This process is quick and I have it detailed on another blog post which I will link to here. In putting the gift together, I wrapped up icing, cookie cut out shapes and jars of toppings I found at Michaels. This makes a really nice gift and a great activity to do at home. You could also include a recipe book. One book my children and I love is Pretend Soup by Mollie Katzen. This book is made for kids to do the cooking and includes healthy recipes as Mollie Katzen is the author of the Moosewood Cookbook.
