Color Study

Using different colors with the same stamp

Savannah has this shirt with swipes of color that each contain a different phrase. I wanted to do something similar and thought Right At Home’s Watercolor background stamp would be a great compliment to my idea. To give my cards a different look, I stamped the background with different colors of inks. Please read along for how I made 5 completely different cards using the same stamp.

Building the background

Right at Home is a delightful stamp store with whimsical stamps and dies. The Watercolor Background stamp is extremely versatile and I used it on this project to make 5 different types of cards. I started by removing the black foam pad in my Misti and adhering the Watercolor stamp to the door. I grabbed a bunch of Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock and put some temporary adhesive on the back to make sure the paper didn’t move when I stamped.
The color combinations I made: Rainbow using Hero Arts Soft Pink, soft cantaloupe, mint julep and soft sky. Christmas: Hero Arts Red Royal and Emerald Green. I also tried Distress ink festive berries and evergreen bough with gold perfect pearls. Green ombré: Momento pear tart Hero Arts field greens, Momento bamboo leaves and cottage ivy. Blue ombré: soft sky, light teal, tide pool and aqua. Purple ombré: Hero Arts lavender, Passion flower, amethyst and grape juice. Some of these Hero Arts colors are from My Monthly Hero Kits and are not sold individually. Do your best to try inks from your stash and make up color combinations.

Adding Titles

I scoured my stamp sets for appropriate words for these cards. For the green and blue ombre panels, I used the Simon Says Stamp and Altenew collaboration for 2017 Stamptember: Fabulous You. The Rainbow card and Christmas card fronts use My Favorite Things Merry Messages and Hampton Art Birthday. The purple ombre card uses Right At Home Script Greetings set. All the sayings were stamped with VersaMark ink and heat embossed with Hero Arts Gold Glitter Embossing Powder. For the green ombre card, I also die cut the large flower image from the Fabulous You stamp set and stamped it with Soft Pink and a mixture of the same greens on the card front. For the last stamp layer, I heat embossed the image with WOW antique gold embossing powder. I then foam mounted the stamped flower onto the card.

Turning a background into a card

Due to the bold stripes, I wanted to keep the card simple so I cut down each card front to 5 1/2″ tall by 4″ wide and mounted them on to A2 sized Hero Arts pre folded notecards. I used the same stamp sets in addition to Hero Arts Everyday Sayings to stamp sayings inside the cards and on the envelopes.
