Using Die Cuts on Cards

For today’s card, I used dies and die cuts to make this card stand out. This card is another submission for the Altenew Educator Certification Program for the Easy Die Cutting class. The instructor in this class had a lot of unique ideas for how to use dies in different ways to achieve various looks on a card. For this card, I am using the Altenew Plaid A cover die and the Altenew inline alphabet dies. Please read along for how I made this card.

Using a die as embossing

For the base of this card, I wanted some texture. I used the Altenew Plaid Cover Die A in my Cuttlebug machine. To use the die to emboss, you need to use an embossing mat. The Cuttlebug comes with an embossing mat. Just follow the directions to build the sandwich andthe die will emboss rather than cut the paper. Using the embossing mat can really stretch your supplies and provide great texture on your card. For the final card, this panel was cut to 4×5 1/8”.

For this card, I used the Altenew inline alphabet set to cut out the sentiment. To make it pop off the page, I cut a strip of blue card stock to 1” wide by 3 3/4” long and adhered the letters to to strip. I like the boldness of this set and the detail of the cut out line. The letters only measure 3/4” and the font works well with different styles of cards.

Putting it together

To finish the panel, I stamped a flower and leaves from Altenew Peony Blossom stamp set. The outline layer was stamped in Hero Arts Bubblegum pink, the background layer in Hero Arts Soft Pink and the detail layer has gold embossing. The leaves are stamped with Hero Arts Field greens for the detail and Momento Pear Tart for the background. All these shapes were fussy cut out and then adhered to the card with some foam squares. To the sentiment panel, I used Versa marker to lay down some sticky ink and then added Hero Arts gold embossing powder for extra shine. The sentiment panel was adhered to the top third of the card with foam tape and the peony was adhered next.
The panel was adhered to an A2 top folding card base. To the card front, I added Honey Bee Rainbow rhinestones for some added detail and shine. This card is now ready to brighten someone’s day. Thank you for taking the time to craft with me today. Let me know how you like this card in the comments below. Have a wonderful day.
