Building texture on cards

Cards are essentially a 2-D medium. Adding texture without adding too much bulk is a papercrafter’s dream. Altenew Academy class, A Touch of Texture helps in making this dream a reality. Within the class, the instructor discusses using background stamps, specialty paper or even scoring to achieve texture on a card. I was intrigued to try using both scoring and ink blending to achieve some different texture. Score lines are creases in a paper made by folding or using a bone folder. Texture on a background helps build interest towards the main sentiment or image. To make the texture on this card, I took a piece of 4 1/4″x 5 1/2″ kraft cardstock and scored it with a scor pal and bone folder at every 3/4″. I made these lines really stand out. I then used Distress Ink in Brushed Corduroy, Ground Espresso and Walnut Stain to add ink all over the panel with a mini ink blending tool. I took care to keep the edges dark and some light in the middle. This background looks like wood paneling. 

To complement the dark colors of the background, I thought a nice floral bouquet would match. On a different piece of the same kraft card stock, I stamped the large flower image from Altenew Blooming Bouquet stamp set in Gina K Amalgam Ink. I used Faber Castell Polychromos pencils to color in the image. There is no die for this image so I fussy cut the flower and ended up cutting off some of the tendrils and sprigs which made it fit on the card panel a bit better and did not cover up all the background. I then sprayed the bouquet with shimmer spray. 

On the card panel, I attached a 1.5″ vellum strip around the middle of the card. I then used foam adhesive to pop up the floral image. I stamped a sentiment from the Altenew/Simon Says Stamp Stamptember 2018 collaboration, Dainty Sprig. I like how this sentiment has a larger scripty word with a smaller phrase under it. I used Stazon black ink to stamp the sentiment because I was stamping on Vellum. I added some Rainbow gems from HoneyBee stamps and some clear Nuvo Drops for added shine. 

This card was really easy to make and I love how using inking and a bone folder really sets this background apart. Please let me know in the comments below how you like to add texture to your cards.
